The Sumitomo Spirit of over 400 years


"You should exercise prudence in business and in all aspects of your life" - This was a message written by Masatomo Sumitomo (1585-1652), the founding father of the Sumitomo family. It was incorporated into the Rules governing the Sumitomo family, has been long respected as the business principle of the family, and is even today the very basis of the activities of Sumitomo Metals.

  1. Sumitomo shall place prime importance on integrity and sound management in the conduct of its business.
  2. Sumitomo's business interest must always be in harmony with public interest; Sumitomo shall adapt to good times and bad times but will not pursue immoral business - excerpt from "Business Principles" in the Rules Governing the Sumitomo family, enacted in 1891.
  3. "A man of noble character esteems wealth, and is scrupulous in seeking the way to acquire it" - personal motto of Teigo Iba, appointed Second Director-General of Sumitomo in 1900.
